I had the honor of interviewing Dona Sauerburger, a remarkable individual who embodies this spirit of continuous growth. With 50 years of experience as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) practitioner, Dona continues to seek new knowledge and share innovative ways to support people with disabilities.

Meet Dona Sauerburger

Dona Sauerburger is a trailblazer in the field of O&M, authoring pivotal works like Independence Without Sight or Sound and Self Study Guides: Street Crossing for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired. Throughout her illustrious career, Dona has been passionate about sharing strategies to help O&M specialists address the challenges their students face.

For me personally, Dona was an unwitting mentor for over a decade. Whenever I encountered a question that my curriculum couldn’t answer, I turned to her comprehensive and accessible blog. Her insights have guided me through countless professional dilemmas, offering clarity and practical advice.

Sharing Knowledge at the 2020 International O&M Online Symposium

I’m thrilled to announce that Dona will be presenting at the 2020 International Orientation and Mobility Online Symposium, alongside Laura Zierer from the American Printing House for the Blind. Their presentations will cover essential topics like:

  • Effective Scanning Practices: Encouraging students to practice scanning in high-risk situations to enhance their spatial awareness and safety.
