What is Your VI Specialist Archetype?
Jul 21, 2022Welcome back to the podcast and welcome to Season 5! Can you believe it? Five years of this incredible journey together—it feels surreal! If you managed to squeeze in a genuine break, give yourself a high five. You’ve earned it. Drop me a DM on Instagram to share all about your break. Did you unwind at home? Travel somewhere new? I’m always inspired by your adventures.
This season, we’re diving into some fresh, transformative topics. Today, we’ll explore the different archetypes of VI (Visual Impairment) specialists. Whether you’re a teacher of students with visual impairments (TVI), an orientation and mobility (O&M) specialist, or any other type of educator, these archetypes might just resonate with you.
Life Lately: What’s Been Happening
If you’ve been keeping up with me on Instagram Stories, you already know a lot about what’s been going on. The past month has been packed! Between work projects, family time, and getting ready for Season 5, it’s been a whirlwind.
On the personal front, my kids loved their time at camp this summer. We even took a little break for some quality family time—though I ended up sick for part of it (parenting, right?). Thankfully, co-parenting saved the day, and I’m so grateful for the support.
Professionally, we’ve been heads down, preparing for what’s next. This summer, my small but mighty team at Allied buckled down to ensure we’re ahead of the curve. With the challenges facing educators, especially the teacher shortage, we’re determined to offer resources that genuinely make a difference.
VI Specialist Archetypes: Where Do You Fit?
As we navigate another year—one likely marked by teacher shortages—it’s crucial to understand where you stand as an educator. This not only helps you identify areas for growth but also empowers you to lean into your strengths.
After years of working with VI professionals, I’ve observed four common archetypes. These apply broadly to educators but feel especially relevant to our field. Let’s break them down:
1. Burnt-Out-Bailey
This archetype struggles on both fronts: teaching effectiveness and personal fulfillment. It’s easy to land here when systems are lacking or personal challenges spill over into your professional life. The good news? Rising out of this phase is absolutely possible with the right support and strategies.
2. Summertime-Stevie
Summertime-Stevie prioritizes personal life above all, sometimes at the expense of their students’ progress. While a healthy work-life balance is essential, neglecting student outcomes leaves a gap in impact.
3. Die-Hard-Dean
Most of us find ourselves here at some point. This archetype works tirelessly to deliver exceptional lessons, often at the cost of personal well-being. While admirable, the lack of balance can lead to burnout.
4. Impactful-Irene
This is the sweet spot. Impactful-Irene achieves incredible student outcomes while maintaining a fulfilling personal life. The key here? Systems. Irene has mastered efficient workflows, clear boundaries, and innovative strategies to maximize her impact.
